The writing on the tiles is the number or name of the ceramic stain so that I can remember what was used.
Test tiles are an important part of the process for majolica. Not all stains work well on the glaze I use because they are meant to be mixed with a white clay body, not brushed on top of a glaze. Or the color turns out much differently from what's shown in the brochure or on the website. Also, the stain can work fine on my glaze if applied thin, but be rough if it's applied too heavily. And then a lot of times, I mix different colors together and experiment with the ratios to try to get a certain color, or just to see what they'll do together. SOMEDAY these will all be hanging on a board or wall (that's why I put a hole for a nail at the top of the tiles) arranged according to the color spectrum.
