She got her name when she escaped from the enclosure one day and my husband finally caught her. He held her close and spoke soothingly while she squawked and fought, but the experience was so traumatic for her that she fainted momentarily. Her eyes closed, her neck fell limp.... My husband thought of the stereotypical Southern-gone-with-the-wind belle and we refer to her now as Charlotte.
One of the sources of inspiration for my work is our organic garden, chickens being a part of that. In March, we acquired five new chicks to supplement the five older ones whose laying has declined. They have names, not because we intended them as pets, but because they each have a personality all their own and the names happen as a means of referring to them. The new ones are unnamed, except for two: Socks, because she has feathers on her legs and feet; and Charlotte.
